Premier Dalton McGuinty to Deliver Keynote Address at CleanTech North 2011 Awards and Summit.
CTN is pleased to announce that this year's Keynote Speaker will be the Honourable Dalton McGuinty, Premier of Ontario. He will be joined by the Honourable Glen Murray, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, to present the CTN Awards for 2011 supported by Tiffany & Co.. Seven companies have been selected for awards this year, including the newly created CleanTech North Innovation Partner Award.
The event is targeted at senior executives, investors, and stakeholders interested in developing successful, world-class clean technology companies in Canada. The agenda will feature insight and discussion from leading cleantech practitioners and influencers, as well as the announcement of the 2011 CTN Companies, Company of the Year, and Innovation Partner of the Yeay.

Brad Duguid and selected CTN Cluster Members will introduce and co-present awards to seven CleanTech North Companies, including Innovator of the Year, Partner of the Year and Company of the Year.

10:00 AM - 10:40 AM: Session 1 - Funding Cleantech in Canada
The economy and and venture financing have faced challenging times in recent years. In this environment Emerald Technology Ventures have been a consistant player and BDC and OMERS in the last year have made major announcements with respect to cleantech investing. Hear three leaders in these organizations discuss the opportunities for cleantech.
- Geoff Catherwood, BDC Venture Capital
Geoff is a registered professional engineer and has 14 years of experience in industrial automation and process control and over 10 years of venture capital experience. Prior to joining BDC Venture Capital in 2001, he worked for Bailey Canada and Asea Brown Boveri — large multi-national industrial process automation suppliers. He has diverse operational experience in the process automation industry, including field service, system commissioning, engineering, management, and sales.
Geoff administers BDC Venture Capital’s Energy and Cleantech portfolio in Western Canada. He is active on the boards of a number of early stage companies, including D-Wave Systems Inc., Teradici Corporation, Sutus Inc., Switch Materials and General Fusion. He also volunteers in a number of programs promoting entrepreneurship, including New Ventures B.C. – an annual business plan competition.
Geoff holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of British Columbia and an Executive MBA from Simon Fraser University. He has also completed the Canadian Securities Course.
- Sid Paquette, OMERS Ventures
Sid Paquette is a Senior Associate at OMERS Ventures and is responsible for contributing to the identification and execution of investment opportunities for OMERS Ventures in the Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT) sectors. Prior to joining OMERS Ventures, Sid was a senior manager in the international tax practice of Deloitte, as well as the Ontario Clean Tech leader for Deloitte and a member of its TMT executive team. Prior to Deloitte, Sid was called to the Bar of Ontario and worked for one of Canada’s leading corporate law firms. Sid has over a decade of experience providing business, tax and legal advisory services to high-growth companies in the TMT sectors. He has specialized in providing M&A advice to Canadian and foreign-based multinational corporations, as well as developing and implementing innovative intellectual property strategies.
Sid holds a B.A. from York University, J.D. from Osgoode Hall Law School, MBA from Wilfrid Laurier University and an MTax from the University of Waterloo.
- Whitney Rockley, Emerald Technology Ventures
Based in Toronto, Whitney Rockley is a Partner with Emerald Technology Ventures and is focused on industrial technology investments within the clean technology sector. Whitney currently serves as the Chair of Arxx Corporation, Director of TerraLUX Inc. and Senscient Inc.. Whitney has sixteen years of investment, operating, environment and strategic planning experience in the energy and water sector. Prior to joining Emerald, Whitney was a partner at Nomura New Energy & Clean Technology Ventures in London and the Director of Venture Capital at EPCOR, a large energy and water company. In addition to completing many of Canada’s first carbon trades, Whitney’s successes were recognized in 2007 when she was named as one of the top 10 women in Cleantech.

Cleantech, sustainability and energy self-sufficiency remain high priorities as many states have created sector specific initiatives and legislation to encourage economic development based on clean and green solutions.
